Once upon a time, “workplace wellness” meant a discounted gym membership and a “wine down” in the boardroom on Friday afternoon! While that was a start – of sorts – the world – and the workplace – has since changed.
In 2025, workplace wellness in Australia is so much more than perks or platitudes. It’s about creating work environments where people feel safe, supported and genuinely able to perform their jobs and thrive.
And that shift is happening not just because it’s the “right thing to do” – but because people (and policies) are starting to expect it.
Why Workplace Wellness Matters in 2025
More of us are talking openly about burnout, mental health, anxiety and overwhelm. The Australian national mental health initiative R U OK? Day, founded by Gavin Larkin in 2009 in honour of his father, is symbolic of this growing awareness. We’re recognising that what happens at work deeply affects how we feel in life.
Workplace wellness isn’t a luxury—it’s becoming a necessity.
It’s linked to:
- Better staff retention
- Stronger team relationships
- Increased creativity and clarity
- Fewer sick days and stress leave
- A more compassionate, productive culture
And in Australia, there’s also now a clearer legal framework for what psychosocial safety at work looks like.
A Quick Word on the Legislation
If you’re in Queensland, you may have heard of the 2022 Managing the Risk of Psychosocial Hazards at Work Code of Practice. This isn’t just a box-ticking exercise – it reflects a growing understanding that mental wellbeing and emotional safety are just as important as physical safety at work.
We won’t go deep into that here (stay tuned for a future article where we’ll unpack the code in plain English), but it’s worth knowing this shift is real – and supported by policy.
What Does Workplace Wellness Actually Look Like, Then?
What is evident in 2025 is that more and more workplaces are ditching the token gestures and starting to do workplace wellness in ways that the evidence shows does actually support their people. Here’s what that’s starting to look like:
✅ Mental health is being more openly spoken about – stress, anxiety, burnout… these aren’t taboo anymore. People are talking about it, and support is showing up before things fall apart. Mental health days are a real thing, not just lip service.
✅ Workshops that go deeper than a lunch-and-learn – It’s not just about ticking a box. More teams are leaning into training that actually helps—covering topics like emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and how to have tricky conversations without blowing up or shutting down.
✅ Boundaries are a sign of strength, not weakness – Saying no, logging off, not replying to emails at 10pm… these are skills people are learning and encouraged to use.
✅ Leaders are doing the work too – It’s not just a “staff” thing. Good managers are getting better at listening, acknowledging and ‘owning’ their impact on the workforce, and making the workplace safer for everyone.
✅ Support isn’t one-size-fits-all anymore – From personalised coaching to simple tools that actually make a difference, workplaces are (finally) realising that people need different kinds of support at different times. The best ones are adapting, not just applying the same fix to every problem.
And What Workplace Wellness Is Not (Anymore)
It’s not about yoga in the breakroom (though yoga’s great, of course).
A staff generated internal newsletter doesn’t cut it for having one’s voice heard.
It’s not just “mental health week” once a year.
Receiving the “Employee of the Month” award is nice – but you know it’s shallow and the trophies are bought in bulk.
And it’s definitely not pretending that burnout is just a personal weakness issue.
Workplace wellness today is about creating a culture where people know they are seen, heard and human. And that that is okay.
If you’re wondering whether your workplace could benefit, here are a few clues:
- People are tired, snappy, or “checking out”
- There’s unspoken tension or frequent conflict
- Communication feels strained or confusing
- Everyone’s busy, but not necessarily thriving
- There’s no space to talk about emotions or stress
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And it can change.
